Victorian Bushfire Appeal David Skeat Tuesday, February 10th 2009
ARMS is launching an appeal to help the victims of the Victorian Bush fires. To date over 180 people have perished and thousands are homeless. 400,00 hectares of forest and farm lands have been burned and in some cases whole towns have been razed to the ground.
There are major fears that two of the bushfires could merge in inacessable areas and make a mega front. Some experts are saying that the worst could still be to come.
Rescue crews are searching burnt areas for survivors and bodies. The Victoria police are treating the fires as a giant crime scene as some of them were deliberately lit by arsonists.
ARMS is arranging volunteer teams to go in and help with clean up efforts in towns affected by the disaster.
Funds raised will be used to put teams on site in the coming days and weeks. These teams will help Bushfire victims in the clean up of their properties. The funds will be used to cover team travel expenses and the cost of keeping the volunteers on site. Once we have completed our bushfire related relief work we will place any excess funds in the ARMS Disaster Trust and use it to fund other disaster relief efforts.
